Evolution of Vietnamese Women Fashion (Part 2/3)

Updated: Jul 6, 2022

The beautiful scenerical land of Vietnam had witnessed various historical time marks which represented periods of evolution in cultural values, unique etiquettes and gorgeous designs of Vietnamese fashion during each dynasty had contributed in building distinguishable impressions on the women’s day to day outfits.

[Time: 15th - 16th Century] Le Dynasty

It can be surely stated that the Le dynasty is the pinnacle era of Vietnamese women fashion as a variety of styles and designs were invented and applied on women's outfits. The outfits during the Le dynasty had complex designs with multiple layers of coats with eye-catching color allocations.

Being heavily influenced by Chinese culture, the traditional clothes during the Le Dynasty didn’t manage to evolve out of the manipulation of its powerful neighbour country's imperial system. The women’s outfits in the Le Dynasty tend to resemble the Hanfu dresses in China, featured by wide sleeves and enhanced by a large belt wrapped around the waist to secure the dress.

[Time: 16th Century] Mac Dynasty

The outfit during this dynasty had become quite similar to the Tu Than dress, with a hair-wear of a piece of cloth wrapped around the hair. Women in the wealthy families even accessories themselves with colourful pieces of cloth that drapes down to their feet, which further flatters their feminine and graceful looks. The accessories invented also have more varieties in shapes, sizes and colours, with flat circular bracelets, earrings shaped as teardrops, lotus or circular shapes.

[Time: 17th - 18th Century] Late Le Dynasty

The Vietnamese fashion styles started to demonstrate its unique essence in cultural practices, evidently illustrated through the variety of styles during the Late Le Dynasty. Women’s outfits during the Late Le Dynasty are shown to be quite conservative, covering the woman’s curves under multiple layers of coloured clothes.
