Evolution of Vietnamese Women Fashion (Part 3/3)

Updated: Jul 6, 2022

The beautiful scenerical land of Vietnam had witnessed various historical time marks which represented periods of evolution in cultural values, unique etiquettes and gorgeous designs of Vietnamese fashion during each dynasty had contributed in building distinguishable impressions on the women’s day to day outfits.

[Time: 19th Century] Nguyen Dynasty

The social life during this dynasty had an enormous influence on the people’s outfits. As the outfits of the wealthier were perceived to be mixed with other cultures, the outfits commonly worn by the lower class people were the traditional outfits such as ao dai, yem (undershirt), ao tu than (four-pieced), khan mo qua (crow-beak-shaped scarf), non quai thao (quai thao hat)... and turned these outfit into the iconic cultural essence of the nation. The red yem escaped from the imperial palace to accompany the working class women to persevere under rain and shine out in the rice field, or the ao tu than gracefully dances in the Lim festivals. On the other hand, fashion belonging to the French culture with A-line skirts, modernised dresses had also immigrated into the lifestyle of young and trendy wealthy women, amongst those there was the Empress Nam Phuong - the last empress of the feudatory system.

[Time: 20th Century - Present] Modern Ao Dai

The outfit during this dynasty had become quite similar to the Tu Than dress, with a hair-wear of a piece of cloth wrapped around the hair. Women in the wealthy families even accessories themselves with colourful pieces of cloth that drapes down to their feet, which further flatters their feminine and graceful looks. The accessories invented also have more varieties in shapes, sizes and colours, with flat circular bracelets, earrings shaped as teardrops, lotus or circular shapes.
