During the past 60 years, the cultural ancient wear of Nhat Binh seems to have losted its impression in the lives of Vietnamese. This ancient wear hasn't been generating a strong impression as the well-known Ao Dai, and it is rarely seen during tourist performances conducted at the Imperial city of Hue.
However, a wedding organized by a couple living in Cao Bang, Vietnam has changed the generation Z’s perspective completely and started the trend for culture wear.
The idea was initially sketched and brewed by the bride - Nguyen Thuy Anh - a modern girl borned in 1993 living in Cao Bang, Vietnam, who fell in love with the appearance of the traditional outfit Nhat Binh.
“I really like the beauty of ancient outfits, especially the outfits during the Nguyen dynasty (1802 - 1883). Despite the lack of popularity of Nhat Binh and Ao Tac amongst the current generations, I just went on with the plan with the help of my best friend anyway.” Thuy Anh said
She further stated that the whole extended family were against her idea of wearing Nhat Binh and Ao Tac, and only her mother was supportive of her daring idea.
“Everyone in the family suggested we select the traditional Ao Dai or an ordinary white wedding down for the engagement date and the wedding date. The elders in the family commented on the traditional culture outfits as being too vintage, cost-inefficient and encouraged us to rent wedding gowns and Ao Dai instead. However, I was determined with the idea. On the wedding day, when we walked out in front of the witness of both our families, everyone was overwhelmed and amazed. We were flattered and content because of our contribution to promoting the traditional culture outfits of Vietnam”, the bride reminisced
About 3 - 4 months prior to the wedding day, the bride-to-be and her group of friends designed the stage banner with patterns consisting of a pair of elegantly flying crane birds, placed on the traditional copper-gold background. They also decorated the stage with vases of crane flowers placed on antique stools, complementing the cultural vintage vibe of the wedding scene. Four of the bride's friends helped her to carry and transport these decorative props and antiques, going back and forth on a 7-hour drive all the way from Ha Noi to Cao Bang.
Thuy Anh even had her traditional dress customised to size and design to ensure that the outfit is perfectly her size and the design matches modern wedding decoration.
"I discussed with my fiancé about the sleeves and the length of the outfits. Aside from that, we even did our own researches about antique accessories like hair pins or jade bangle bracelets - which to wear and how to wear them to complete the outfit in the most appropriate and meaningful way." - Thuy Anh said
The wedding photos shared by the couple engaged thousands of interactions and raise enormous interest from all generations of Vietnamese.
Social media is an amazing place for couples to do research and get inspiration for wedding ideas. However, COVID-19 pandemic is indeed creating a huge impact on wedding plans.
"Everything was planned for the wedding since 2020, we had our traditional Ao Dai customised and the team even made contact lists for wedding planning. However, with all the lockdowns and sudden announcements, all the places were booked out. Many people are bringing forward their wedding plans due to COVID-19." An anonymous Vietcharm customer from Melbourne shared
"We are ready for our wedding to be placed in 2023 now, and we are doing it the most traditional way to hopefully send a positive message to the community and remind ourselves of our roots."
